A Balanced Curriculum

North Ainslie Band plays at the Ainslie Shops Community Fair

Our philosophy and practices promote the understanding that successful learners are "risk-takers" who engage in a balanced curriculum.

We believe that a strong and varied arts program provides a variety of media through which students can develop sound emotional literacy and can respond creatively to their environment and sense of humanity. We offer a comprehensive program that incorporates the strands of drama, music, visual arts and dance.

Singing and Performing in Public

We have an ongoing involvement in the Australian National University (ANU) Music Education Program, and have participated in the national Music Count Us In singing event for eight years. Students are also encouraged to audition for the ACT Primary Concert Choir. Students from kindergarten to year six also participate in the annual North Canberra Spectacular arts showcase and Limelight Art Exhibition.

Instrumental Music

North Ainslie is part of the ACT Instrumental Music Program (IMP) and runs both a year 5 and year 6 woodwind band. Students have the opportunity to play flutes, clarinets, oboes and percussion if selected for the band. Upper primary students, who are not involved in the Band program, have the opportunity to participate in specialist drumming lessons each week. North Ainslie students play as an ensemble as well as participating with other school instrumental groups. Various percussion and recorder groups also compliment our school music program.

Our year 5 and 6 bands and drumming groups perform at school assemblies throughout the year and also at public functions, including our multi-cultural Fiesta, the Hackett Preschool Fete, Floriade and local community fairs.

Dance

A specialist dance teacher is employed to teach dance and movement classes across the school. Students from kindergarten to year six are invited to showcase their dance skills in the annual North Canberra Spectacular arts showcase.

Visual Arts

Visual Arts holds a high priority at North Ainslie. Students are exposed to the techniques of various artists and periods, and are taught skills relating to colour, line, form and shape. North Ainslie currently employs a specialist visual art teacher. Student work is exhibited at our biannual Creative Arts Showcase and the annual ACT Education Limelight Art Exhibition.
